A local eSIM plan is intended for a particular destination, while a regional plan can cover several destinations with one allowance. Choosing between them starts with your itinerary: where will you actually need mobile data, and for how long?

A regional plan is not automatically the best value, and a local plan is not automatically cheaper. Compare the packages available for your trip using the same data allowance and validity wherever possible.

When a local eSIM makes sense

If you are spending the whole trip in one country, a local package is a sensible option to compare first. It keeps the choice focused on the coverage, allowance and duration you need in that destination.

For example, a week spent entirely in France can start with a comparison of France eSIM packages. Check the selected option’s details rather than assuming every package for the same country has identical conditions.

When a regional eSIM can be convenient

A regional package can be useful for a trip that crosses borders. Instead of managing a separate plan for each stop, you may be able to use one package across the destinations listed in its coverage.

For an itinerary through France, Germany and another European destination, check that all three appear in the specific regional package’s included-country list. The word “Europe” alone does not tell you which countries or territories are included.

Compare these five details before paying

  1. Coverage: verify every destination, including a stopover where you expect to use data.
  2. Validity: count the full trip, including travel days, and check when the validity period begins.
  3. Data allowance: establish whether the allowance is shared across covered destinations or subject to other limits.
  4. Included services: check whether the plan is data-only or explicitly includes a number, calls or texts.
  5. Hotspot and top-up rules: confirm these separately if you need them.

Also check network information, speed restrictions and any fair-use conditions shown for the selected package. A country’s inclusion does not guarantee a signal in every building, remote area or transport route.

Installation is different from activation

Installing an eSIM profile on your phone and starting a package’s validity are not necessarily the same event. Activation rules vary: use the product details and installation email to decide when to install and enable your package.

See our activation guide before travelling. You will need a compatible, carrier-unlocked phone and a reliable internet connection to install the profile.

Think about how you will use your phone

A multi-country trip does not automatically require a large allowance. Navigation, messaging, streaming and sharing data with a laptop create very different needs. Estimate your usage before comparing prices, and avoid paying for destinations or services you will not use.

If your route changes, recheck coverage before crossing into another country. An active eSIM profile cannot extend a package beyond its stated coverage. Do not assume coverage includes flights, cruise ships or maritime networks.

Frequently asked questions

Will a regional plan work in every country in that region?

Only the destinations listed for the selected package should be treated as included. Read the coverage list before purchasing.

Can I keep my usual messaging apps?

Your apps can use an internet connection, but account verification and access depend on each app. A data-only eSIM does not itself provide ordinary voice calls, SMS or a new phone number.

Can I top up the same eSIM later?

That depends on the package. Check availability before relying on a top-up for a longer trip.
