A travel eSIM can provide the mobile connection your phone shares with a laptop, tablet or another phone—but only when your device and selected package support hotspot use. The fact that a phone has a hotspot setting does not guarantee that every eSIM plan permits it.

If sharing internet is essential for your trip, confirm hotspot availability in the package details before purchasing a travel eSIM.

What is a mobile hotspot?

A hotspot lets another device use your phone’s mobile data connection, usually over Wi-Fi. The connected device uses the phone’s data allowance; it does not receive a separate allowance simply because it connects over Wi-Fi.

This can be useful for checking email on a laptop or helping a travel companion get online. It also means that downloads, backups and streaming on connected devices can reduce the same package allowance.

Check your package before relying on tethering

If the product page does not make this clear, ask support before buying. Do not assume that hotspot rules are identical across TOURESIMO packages.

How to share the connection

  1. Install the eSIM using your package instructions and our setup guide.
  2. At your destination, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and apply the package’s required network settings.
  3. Confirm that the phone itself can browse using mobile data.
  4. Open your phone’s hotspot settings, enable sharing and set a strong password.
  5. Connect the other device to the hotspot’s Wi-Fi network using that password.

On iPhone, look for Personal Hotspot. On Android, look for a setting such as Hotspot & tethering or Mobile Hotspot. Labels and options vary by manufacturer and software version. Google provides official Android hotspot instructions and notes that carriers may restrict tethering.

Read our travel data allowance guide to plan shared usage, and compare local and regional eSIM plans if your route crosses borders.

Keep control of data and battery use

Before connecting a laptop, pause large downloads, cloud synchronisation and automatic updates. A laptop may treat the hotspot as ordinary Wi-Fi and start background tasks that you would not run on a limited mobile allowance.

Monitor usage on both devices, disconnect devices you no longer need and turn off the hotspot when finished. Sharing a connection can also increase battery consumption, so plan how you will charge your phone during the day.

What if the hotspot does not work?

First check whether mobile data works on the phone itself. If it does not, check package validity, remaining allowance, coverage and the installation instructions. If the phone works but the connected device does not, recheck the hotspot password, package restrictions and device settings.

Do not delete the eSIM profile as a first troubleshooting step: reinstalling or transferring a profile may not be supported. Contact support with your order number and a description of the problem, keeping your QR code private.

Frequently asked questions

Can two people share one plan?

They may be able to share a hotspot when the package and devices allow it, but both users consume the same allowance and need to stay within the hotspot’s range.

Is a hotspot guaranteed to support video meetings?

No. Performance depends on coverage, network conditions, device settings and plan limits. Have an alternative connection for time-critical work.
